manded Noah to build a boat. Then he said: `I am going to
send a flood on the earth to destroy all living beings; every
creature will die. Go into the boat with your wife, your sons
and their wives. Take with you a male and a female of every
kind of animal and bird, in order to keep them alive. And
take all kinds of food for you and for them.’
The rain continued for forty days; and as the waters rose,
they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters became
so deep that they covered even the tallest mountains; and the
boat drifted on the surface. The Lord destroyed every human
being, animal and bird. Only Noah, and those who were with
him, survived.

must master it.’
Then Cain said to his brother Abel: `Let us go out to the
f i elds.’ When they were in the fields, Cain attacked his
brother Abel, and killed him. The Lord asked Cain: `Where is
your brother Abel?’ Cain answered: ‘I do not know. Am I my
brother’s guardian?’ The Lord said: `Why have you done this?
Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now
you are cursed from the ground. You will become a restless
wanderer on the earth.’ Cain said: `Your punishment is more
than I can bear. Anyone who finds me, will kill me.’ The Lord
put a mark on Cain, to warn anyone who met him, not to
kill him.

from which you came. You are made of dust, and to dust you
will return.’
Adam, which means `man’, named his wife Eve, because
she would be the mother of all human beings.
Then the Lord God said: `Human beings are now like us,
knowing good and evil. They must not be allowed to eat fruit
from the tree of life, and live for ever.’ So he banished them
from the garden of Eden.
