Jewish religion in religious studies — Saul’s curse

October 29, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — Prior to the battle Saul had said: ‘A curse on anyone who eats
any food, before I take revenge on my enemies.’ So the
Israelite men had eaten nothing that day, and were now weak
with hunger. As they pursued the Philistines, they came to a
wood where there was honey everywhere. Jonathan, unaware
of his father’s curse, dipped a stick into a honeycomb, and
ate some honey; at once he felt better. One of the men then
told him of the curse. Jonathan said: `What a terrible thing
my father has done! If our men had been well fed, they
would have slaughtered even more Philistines.’
At dusk Saul said to his men: ‘We shall attack the
Philistines again at night, plundering them until dawn.’ But
the priest, who kept by his side, said: `Let us consult God
f i rst.’ So Saul asked God: `Shall I attack the Philistines? Will
you give us victory?’ God did not answer. Saul declared: `Someone has sinned. I swear by the living God, who protects Israel, that the guilty man will be put to death – even if it is my son Jonathan.’
Then Jonathan said: `Here I am. I ate a little honey. I am
ready to die.’ Saul exclaimed: `May God strike me dead, if I
do not put you to death.’ But the men protested: ‘It cannot
be right to kill Jonathan – he won this great victory for Israel.
We swear by the living God that he will not lose a single hair
from his head.’
So the Israelite men saved Jonathan from death. Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and led the men back to their own territory.

Jewish religion in religious studies — Victory against the Philistines

October 28, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — Jonathan said to the young man who carried his weapons:
`Let us go to an outpost of the Philistine army – just you and
1. Perhaps the Lord will help us. If he does, it will indicate
that he will give victory to our army – even though we are
few in number.’ The young man answered: `Whatever you
want to do, I am with you.’ Jonathan said: `Come, then. We
shall walk towards their men, and let them see us.’
Jonathan and the young man appeared from behind some
large rocks. The Philistines soldiers said to one another: `The
Hebrews are coming out of the places where they have been
hiding.’ Jonathan said to the young man: `Follow me. The
Lord has given Israel victory.’ Jonathan attacked the Philistine
outpost, knocking down about twenty soldiers; and the
young man, who was running behind him, killed them.
Seeing this skirmish, the whole Philistine army panicked.
As the confusion grew worse, Saul and his men took the
opportunity to march into battle. Some Hebrews, who had
joined the Philistine army, now changed sides, adding to the
confusion. Within a short time the entire Philistine army was
f l eeing, with Saul and his men in hot pursuit.
Thus the Lord saved Israel on that day.

Jewish religion in religious studies — Saul’s transformation

October 27, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — Then Samuel said to Saul: ‘Go now to Gibeah, where there is

a Philistine camp. At the entrance of the town you will meet
a group of prophets, who will be dancing and singing. The
Spirit of the Lord will suddenly take control of you, and you
will join their singing and dancing; you will be transformed.’
Saul did as Samuel instructed. When he began dancing and
singing, he was seen by people who already knew him. They
said to one another: `What has happened to Saul? Has he
become a prophet?’
Samuel called together the people of Israel. He picked out
Saul, who was a head taller than anyone else, and declared:
`This is the man that the Lord has chosen as your king. There
is no one to match him.’ The people shouted: `Long live the
king!’ Then Samuel said: ‘If you and your king follow the
Lord, all will go well for you. But if you and your king rebel
against the Lord, flouting his laws, he will raise his hand
against you.’
Saul picked three thousand men to fight the Philistines.
The Philistines responded by assembling a vast army, with
thirty thousand war chariots. The Philistines had allowed no
blacksmiths to work in Israel, to prevent the Israelites from
making swords and spears. So, as the two armies faced one
another, none of the Israelites possessed a sword, except Saul
himself and his son Jonathan.

12.14-15; 1 3.2a, 5a, 19, 22

Jewish religion in religious studies — Anointing Saul as king

October 20, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — The leaders of Israel paid no attention to Samuel’s warning,
and said: ‘We are determined to be like other nations, with
a king ruling over us. He will lead us out to war, and fight
our battles.’ Samuel related these words to the Lord, who
replied: `Do what they want – give them a king.’
A short while later the Lord said to Samuel: `Tomorrow I
shall send you a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Anoint him
as king of my people Israel.’ The following day Samuel
caught sight of a handsome, well-built man called Saul. The
Lord said to Samuel: `This is the man I told you about; he
will govern my people.’
Saul came over to Samuel, and said: `I am looking for the
prophet who is said to live in this place.’ Samuel replied: ‘I
am the prophet.’ Samuel sent Saul to the local place of wor-
ship, and later joined him. They ate together there; then
Samuel took Saul to his own home, and he made a bed for
him on the roof.
The following morning Samuel took a jar of olive oil, and
poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul, and said: `The Lord
anoints you as king of his people Israel. You will govern his people, and protect them from their enemies.’

Jewish religion in religious studies — Asking for a king

October 20, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — When Samuel was old, the leaders of Israel went to his home,
and said: `Appoint a king to rule over us. We want to have a
king, as other nations do.’ This request upset Samuel, so he
prayed to the Lord. The Lord answered: `Listen to all the
people are saying to you. In asking for a king, they are
rejecting not only your leadership, but also mine. From the
time I brought them out of Egypt they have turned away
from me, and worshipped other gods; now they are doing to
you what they have always done to me. So listen to them; but
solemnly warn them of how their king will treat them.’
Samuel said to the leaders: `This is how your king will
treat you. He will turn some of your sons into soldiers; they
will ride in chariots pulled by horses, or march in front of
the chariots. He will appoint a few of them officers in charge
of a thousand men or fifty men. He will compel your other
sons to plough his fields, harvest his crops, and make
weapons of war. Your daughters will have to make perfumes
for him, and cook food for his table. He will take your best
f i elds, vineyards and olive-groves, and give them to his
officials. He will take a tenth of your corn and your grapes,
and give them to his attendants. He will take your servants,
and your best cattle and donkeys, and make them work for
him. And he will take a tenth of your flocks of sheep. You
yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you
will cry out to be saved from the king you have demanded;
but the Lord will not listen to you.’
i Samuel 8. 1a, 40, Sb- 18

Jewish religion in religious studies

October 16, 2010

Jewish religion in religious studies — You must rid yourselves of all
foreign gods, and worship the Lord alone, serving only him.
He will rescue you from the hands of the Philistines.’ So the
Israelites destroyed their idols, and worshipped only the Lord.
Then Samuel formed the men of Israel into an army.
The Philistine rulers heard of Samuel’s action, and set out
to attack the Israelites. When the Israelites saw the Philistine
army, they began to tremble with fear. They said to Samuel:
`Pray to the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines.’
Samuel slaughtered a young lamb, and burnt it whole as a
sacrifice. Then he prayed to the Lord – and the Lord answered
his prayer. As the Philistines moved forward, the Lord caused
thunder to roar in the sky above them. This threw them into
a panic, and they fled. The Israelites pursued them, and killed
them all.
The Lord kept the Philistines away from the Israelites for
as long as Samuel lived. Once a year Samuel travelled around
the Israelite territory, and settled disputes. For the rest of the
year he remained at his home, where people came to seek his
advice.
i Samuel 3. 1 gb-20; 7.3b-4, 7-r ra, r3b, 16-17a
