The doings on the web all over the World Cup are unbelievable. The theme is a top trender on Twitter and spill through your Facebook status updates this morning and will find a lot of, “can’t wait for the US/England game at 3pm EST.”
Mainly, the world has gone football crazy.
With social media, events like this bring the world nearer together, particularly as players, coaches and insiders can make substance of their own that we, as fans, can have entrée to. Social media will give us an indoor look into the games.
Well, at least we thought it would as news reporters say that hopes of World Cup players tweeting (or any other social-like web activity) have been banned.
In preceding years, things like sex and booze has been banned. Coaches desire their players to be hard and prepared to play, with small disruptions. Those distractions, it seems that, comprise the social web.
As news reporters reported, players from Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Holland, Germany, Argentina and England are prohibited to use social services such as Twitter. A coach, Marcelo Bielsa of Chile, banned all social networking and yet put a curfew on usual or non-social Internet exercise throughout the evening.
These bans are similar to those put in place by professional sporting leagues, including the NFL and NBA. NFLers are banned from using social media during all games and for a 90-minute period prior to and following a game. Additionally, players are not allowed to have someone else post an update or tweet on their behalf.
What do you think? Wouldn’t the ability of players (World Cup and pros alike), be interesting if they could provide us with an inside look at these events via Tweeting, pics, videos? Or are these just distractions for players who have a job to do?
