Former President Bill Clinton hospitalized in Manhattan hospital

Current news in the US says that former president Bill Clinton is hospitalized for a procedure related to his heart. He was taken and hospitalized in Manhattan hospital late this afternoon and two tubes were installed in one of his coronary arteries of heart.
Bill Clinton is 63, who had a quadruple heart bypass operation in 2004, complained of brief episodes of chest discomfort over the past few days, even while at rest, said his cardiologist, Dr. Allen Schwartz, chief of cardiology at New York City’s Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Schwartz performed an angiography, finding no evidence of a heart attack or damage to Clinton’s heart. Today’s procedure “makes him less susceptible to future heart attacks,” Schwartz said. “His prognosis is excellent.” Pictures taken of Clinton’s arteries and of bypass grafts he received four years ago revealed that one of the grafts was blocked. Because of that problem, doctors placed two tubes in his carotid artery. This tube is a wire mesh pipe used to prop open an artery. The blockage was typical of the “natural history” of bypass treatment, which has a 10 to 20 percent failure rate five years after the surgery, according to Schwartz.
“This was not a result of his lifestyle or diet, which has been excellent,” Schwartz said, adding that Clinton is “in excellent condition, as evidenced both by what he does and objective testing.” President Clinton has been on a healthier diet since his 2004 operation, but maintains a busy schedule that has seen him go from the Davos World Economic Forum last week, to New York, and eventually to Haiti and back in one day. President Bill Clinton has been working in recent weeks to help relief efforts in Haiti. Since leaving office, he has maintained a busy schedule working on humanitarian projects.
Doctors will have to watch Clinton closely for signs of excessive bleeding from the spot in the leg where doctors inserted a catheter, said Dr. Spencer King, a cardiologist at St. Joseph’s Heart and Vascular Institute in Atlanta and past president of the American College of Cardiology.
Complications are rare. The death rate from non-emergency angioplasty is well under 1 percent, King said. Let’s hope and pray that Bill Clinton will be back on his feet soon. Stay in touch for more news in US.
