In petionville an Associated Press videographer saw the wrecked hospital, a hillside Port-au-Prince district which is home to several diplomats and wealthy Haitians, as well as a big number of poor people.
In another place in the capital, U.S. government officialdom reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a abyss.
“Within a minute of the quake . . . soil, dust and smoke rose up over the city, a blanket that completely covered the city and obscured it for about 12 minutes until the atmospheric conditions dissipated the dust,� Mike Godfrey said who works as a contractor for USAID, told CNN from Port-au-Prince.
Raymond Joseph who is Haiti’s ambassador to the U.S. said that from Washington that he spoke to Haitian President Rene Preval’s chief of staff, Fritz Longchamp, just after the quake hit.
He added that Longchamp told him that “buildings were crumbling right and left� near the national palace. He said he had not been able to get through by phone to Haiti since.
Don Blakeman, an analyst at the USGS, stated that such a strong quake carried the possibility for widespread damage.
