World’s Kidney Day 2011 – Prevention is better than cure
March 10, 2011
Just like many other year, the world is celebrating World’s Kidney Day. In Island fundraisers marked World Kidney Day where a small group of local individuals are raising awareness of kidney diseases on World kidney day. An organization named as The Jack Quirk Renal Care Fund works to collect funds for the renal unit and kidney patients in the Isle of Man.
Other than this many online news agencies as well as electronic and print media is found telling people about kidney related diseases on world’s kidney day. Many are recommending on World’s Kidney Day that one should always look forward for methods to protect you from chronic kidney diseases.
The World Kidney Day was initially an initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations. The campaign’s primary objective was to encourage public health authorities to raise awareness of chronic kidney disease.
Many reports and surveys have concluded that nearly one billion people worldwide have high blood pressure and more than 500 million have chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is the unchecked high blood pressure that often severely damages the kidneys and is a main reason of chronic kidney disease.
This day correctly termed as World Kidney Day is recalled in order to encourage people to face up to the punitive realities of kidney disease and inspire people to check if they are at risk.
Hidden risks of chronic kidney disease can result into progressive loss of kidney function finally leading to the essential for dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant.

WKD Steering Committee Co-chair Dr. William Couser explains, “The incidence of chronic kidney disease is escalating with 10-13% of the population affected in most countries. Added to this, millions are dying prematurely of cardiovascular diseases linked to chronic kidney disease. We want to foster more aggressive intervention by physicians to better manage both high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease, as well as encourage health ministries around the world to invest in preventive measures,”
In a special report it was mentioned that only 30% of people with chronic kidney disease are aware they have the condition. The World Kidney Day campaign targets to educate the public to be more aware of common risk factors for kidney disease like high blood pressure.
If you find a near one with such symptoms they should go for a clinical check before it is too late.

There are seven methods to maintain health kidneys:
1. Keep fit and active.
2. Keep regular control of your blood sugar level
3. Monitor your blood pressure
4. Eat healthy and keep your weight in check
5. Do not smoke
6. Do not take over-the-counter pills on a regular basis
7. Check your kidney function if you have one or more of the high risk factors.
