News in the US with a political news check: The 2010 United States Senate election in Illinois will take place on November 2, 2010, alongside 33 other elections to the United States Senate in other states as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. The filing deadline for the primaries was on November 1, 2009.
The primaries took place on February 2, 2010, the earliest of any primary election in any other state. Illinois election resulted in Mark Kirk elected as the Republican nominee, and Alexi Giannoulias was elected as the Democratic nominee. Both are favorites and long-time front-runners in their respective primary elections.
The primaries for governor, however, are both still up in the air. On the Democratic side, Governor Pat Quinn insists that he’s won, while challenger Dan Hynes insists, “If democracy means anything, it means that we need to count all the votes.” Quinn leads by roughly 5,400 votes with 99% of precincts reporting, a lead of less than 1%. Republican candidates are caught up in a three-way toss-up. By 2am this Wednesday morning, Bill Brady was up only a few hundred votes over Kirk Dillard, with Andy McKenna trailing close behind.
Closely watched Illinois election primary voters faced two inches of fresh snow on Tuesday. Due to this snowfall campaign officials in Chicago were forced to take some steps to get voters to the polls. Spokesman for Democratic candidate for Senate David Hoffman, Thom Karmik said that his office had several rooms for the volunteers and they had to be more vigilant and had to do little more effort to get the voters out and it would tough in the bad weather but no exception would be accepted on that day.
