Jewish religion in religious studies — You must rid yourselves of all
foreign gods, and worship the Lord alone, serving only him.
He will rescue you from the hands of the Philistines.’ So the
Israelites destroyed their idols, and worshipped only the Lord.
Then Samuel formed the men of Israel into an army.
The Philistine rulers heard of Samuel’s action, and set out
to attack the Israelites. When the Israelites saw the Philistine
army, they began to tremble with fear. They said to Samuel:
`Pray to the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines.’
Samuel slaughtered a young lamb, and burnt it whole as a
sacrifice. Then he prayed to the Lord – and the Lord answered
his prayer. As the Philistines moved forward, the Lord caused
thunder to roar in the sky above them. This threw them into
a panic, and they fled. The Israelites pursued them, and killed
them all.
The Lord kept the Philistines away from the Israelites for
as long as Samuel lived. Once a year Samuel travelled around
the Israelite territory, and settled disputes. For the rest of the
year he remained at his home, where people came to seek his
advice.
