Jewish religion in religious studies — The leaders of Israel paid no attention to Samuel’s warning,
and said: ‘We are determined to be like other nations, with
a king ruling over us. He will lead us out to war, and fight
our battles.’ Samuel related these words to the Lord, who
replied: `Do what they want – give them a king.’
A short while later the Lord said to Samuel: `Tomorrow I
shall send you a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Anoint him
as king of my people Israel.’ The following day Samuel
caught sight of a handsome, well-built man called Saul. The
Lord said to Samuel: `This is the man I told you about; he
will govern my people.’
Saul came over to Samuel, and said: `I am looking for the
prophet who is said to live in this place.’ Samuel replied: ‘I
am the prophet.’ Samuel sent Saul to the local place of wor-
ship, and later joined him. They ate together there; then
Samuel took Saul to his own home, and he made a bed for
him on the roof.
The following morning Samuel took a jar of olive oil, and
poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul, and said: `The Lord
anoints you as king of his people Israel. You will govern his people, and protect them from their enemies.’

i Samuel 8. r9-22a; 9. i5-16a, 1 7-190, 24b-25; Io. 1 a
