October 15, 2010
Jewish religion in religious studies — A few days later Naomi said to Ruth: ‘We must find a husband for you.’ So that evening, at Naomi’s instruction, Ruth
washed and perfumed herself, and put on her finest clothes.
Then she went to the barn where Boaz was threshing the
barley. She did not let him see her, After he had finished
threshing, Boaz ate a meal, lay down on a pile of barley, and
fell asleep. Ruth lifted his blanket, and lay at his feet.
During the night Boaz woke suddenly, and was surprised
to find a young woman lying at his feet. `Who are you?’ he
asked. She answered: `I am Ruth. Since you are a relative, you
are responsible for taking care of me. So please marry me.’
Boaz said: `Every young man in the town admires your beauty;
you could have gone after one of them. In the morning I shall
f i nd out whether God intends me to marry you.’
In the morning Boaz went to see the nearest relative of
Naomi bb husband, and said. • 7Vaom1 rants to se)) lzer hus-
band’s field. You have the right to buy it; and if you refuse,
the right passes to me.’ The man said: `I shall buy it.’ Boaz
said: `You must also take Ruth, Naomi’s daughter-in-law.’ So
the man said: ‘In that case my children could not inherit the
f i eld; so you may buy it.’ According to the custom of that time, the man took off his sandal and gave it to Boaz, as a sign of their agreement. Boaz then announced to the leaders of the town that he would marry Ruth.
Ruth had a son, Obed, whose own son, Jesse, was father to King David.
