Jewish religion — The Flood
August 31, 2010
Jewish religion — The Lord saw that human beings had become wicked, and
their thoughts inclined constantly towards evil. He felt sorry
that he had created them, and he was so filled with sadness
that he declared: ‘I shall wipe humankind from the face of the earth. I shall also wipe out the animals and the birds. I regret having made any of them.’
But the Lord was pleased with Noah, who had no faults,
and was the only righteous man on earth. The Lord com-
manded Noah to build a boat. Then he said: `I am going to
send a flood on the earth to destroy all living beings; every
creature will die. Go into the boat with your wife, your sons
and their wives. Take with you a male and a female of every
kind of animal and bird, in order to keep them alive. And
take all kinds of food for you and for them.’
The rain continued for forty days; and as the waters rose,
they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters became
so deep that they covered even the tallest mountains; and the
boat drifted on the surface. The Lord destroyed every human
being, animal and bird. Only Noah, and those who were with
him, survived.
