Jewish religion — God planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and he put there the first man and woman. In the middle of the
garden stood the tree which gives life, and the tree that gives
knowledge of good and evil. TreeOfKnowledge

Jewish religion — He said to the man and woman:

`You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except the
tree which gives knowledge of good and evil; if you eat the fruit of that tree, you will die the same day.’
The snake was the most cunning of all God’s creatures. He
asked the woman: `Did God really say that you must not eat
certain fruits?’ The woman replied: `We may eat the fruit
from any tree in the garden except the one in the middle.
God has told us not to eat the fruit of that tree; if we do, we
shall die the same day.’ The snake said: `You will not die.
God knows that when you eat this fruit, your eyes will be
opened; you will become like God, knowing good and evil.’
The woman admired the beauty of the tree; she was con-
vinced its fruit would be sweet, and would confer wisdom
on her. She took some and ate it, and also gave some to her
husband, who was with her. Their eyes were opened, and
they realized they were naked; so they
sewed fig leaves together, and
covered themselves.
Genesis 2.8-9, i6-17; 3.1-7
