Hot sports news: Pro bowl is all stars game in National football league; popularly known as American football around the world. Being the terminal game of the year, pro bowl is played after super bowl and the league championship game at the end of a season. After the alliance of American football league with National foot ball league in 1970, pro bowl is now officially called as AFC-NFC pro bowl. (AFC is an abbreviation of American football league and NFC for national football league). The inaugurating pro bowl match was played in 1980 at Aloha Stadium located at Honolulu; Hawaii.
Historical background
It was end of season when all star game was included in the timetable of national football league in year 1938-39 among the new league champions and all stars professionals team. This manner of arrangement remained the same for successive four seasons. The only change that took place was that now all stars squad comprised of only national football league players.
The World War
The event that initiated the Second World War; when Japan attacked at Pearl Harbor in January 1942, this game was shifted from the ground of Los Angeles to New York’s Polo Grounds. The final match was thus held in December 1942.
The game series was abandoned in 1943 as it was seen that being a war time the national football league itinerary was reduced. Another impetus for abandoning of this series was related to the volunteering of talented players in the war.
Revival of pro bowl by NFL
Though it seemed that the game had lost its charm but national football league gave it a new life after 1950 season. Now it was called the Pro Bowl. The game became a skirmish among all star teams including: National versus American 1951-1953 and Eastern versus Western 1954-1970.
AFL: 1962-70
American football league, the rival built its all star game in 1962. AFL plied the similar format as was used in eastern versus western.
The merger of AFL and NFL
In 1970 AFL alliance itself with NFL and the name NFL’s all star game thus was permuted to AFC-NFC Pro Bowl. The coaches of both the teams that had lost the championship of AFC-NFC were then nominated as coaches for Pro Bowl teams. It was a kind of compromise that was a result of a decision to dismantle the Playoff Bowl.
Valuable player award
Honolulu became the established site for the game. This is acknowledged to the opus of Dan McGuire who is the sports editor of Honolulu advertisements. He was him who had reached the officialdoms of national football league with the recommendations in 1970. It is for this reason that now the most valuable award of the game is named after McGuire, who is no longer with us.
2009 deal
This year national football league had a plan to relocate the game pro bowl at the site of super bowl that is the host as well as haranguing it a week before super bowl. Howsoever the league marked that the 2009 game will be held in Honolulu. It has been reported national football league has decided that pro bowl will move to super bowl host town in 2010; plus will be played a weekend before super bowl.
MVP Pro Bowl
In Pro Bowl the introductory most valuable player award MVP was given in 1951. Later in 1957-1971 two more MVP awards were presented to offensive back and defensive lineman. But since 1973 just one award for MVP is presented despite the fact that previously this award has been presented thrice to multiple players.
Amendments in the game
Some new changes have been introduced in the Pro Bowl for the safety of players. These amendments include:
1. Offenses are not allowed
2. The defenders cannot press blitz or coverage.
3. Intentional ground penalties are not called.
The Uniform
The Pro Bowl team is made of different team players of NFL; the idea of using their own uniforms would be very confusing. Therefore the uniform holds players swearing helmets of their own teams while the dress is bold blue for NFC and bold red for AFC. The other teams wear white jerseys with blue or red accents respectively.
It was initially propagated that the uniform of Pro Bowl is set on by the winners of Super Bowl but it is not true. The design of the uniform keeps on changing after ever two years while the colour rotates.
