REBIRTH OF THE GREAT GAME
March 10, 2010
News Worldwide — The great game was a term used to describe the rivalry between British and Russia in Afghanistan. It was when Afghanistan had split into city states and during this period, when Durrani kingdom had broke up both British and Russians began there great game of incorporating Afghanistan in their respective sphere of influence. They fought three anglo-afgan wars to control the foreign affairs of this territory.

The post 9/11 events show that the great game has been incorporated again but to be played again by USA in the name of war on terror. History is evident that USA has had terrible results when ever it has entered into a conflict directly, therefore preferring proxy wars instead. Afghanistan is not a country where USA should wait and watch for options as it has been an un-healable bleeding wound bringing an empire down. America, Allying Pakistan by force in war on terror brought the dilemma of Afghanistan back, which had never ended earlier. And one cannot forget the notion, “with us or against us”.
The height of conflicts between militants and Pakistani soldiers has magnified the troubled neighbor’s impact on Pakistan once again. Militant defiance against government on basis of adopting pro-US approach in policy making justifying an ambiguous term of “Enlightened Moderation” has troubled and destabilized the whole state. Government trying to be indefeasible towards its policies with rigidity has further infirmed the scenario.
The practical sovereignty of Pakistan was at stake during USA’s attack on Afghanistan but event are moving towards a level where questions would rise regarding the term sovereignty to be used for Pakistan or not. Or Pakistan would turn into a state where the policies for it would be designed by others for its best interest and to restore democracy.
Got something to say?
