CR Johnson dies at the Squaw Valley

News Worldwide – Local breaking news reports about the sudden death of CR Johnson in the Squaw Valley last night Feb 24th. He was one of the great guys and phenomenal talents in skiing. CR Johnson was 26. Scott Gaffney was the first to provide a few details of the crash. According to Gaffney, Johnson got caught up on some rocks going off a cliff on Light Towers (part of the famous Headwall of Squaw Valley).
Hitting the rocks threw Johnson over the handlebars, hitting his head and neck on rocks below. JT Holmes was with Johnson when the tragic accident happened. Holmes told us late Wednesday that CR Johnson died instantly on the spot. Jim Rogers, a member of the Lake Tahoe-area resort’s ski patrol, told the Associated Press that Johnson was skiing with a group of friends when he fell at a “very, very tight, rocky area.” Ski patrols were on the scene within minutes, but efforts to revive Johnson failed. Johnson fell face first, then spun around and struck the back of his head on rocks, according to the AP report. He was reportedly wearing a helmet, but Rogers said the helmet took a serious blow. Rogers said that Johnson was skiing for recreation with friends and not as part of a competition.
The news has rocked the ski world. CR Johnson was hugely influential, with a heart as big as his skills. In 2005, Johnson donated his entire winnings from the Paul Mitchell Ultimate Bumps and Jumps competition to Tsunami Relief. Johnson made an incredible comeback after a freak accident in December 2005 involving a collision with Kye Petersen at Brighton Resort in Utah. Johnson suffered a major head injury. After emerging from a coma, Johnson had to relearn everything, from swallowing food to walking. His steadfast determination fueled by an immense love of skiing won him unanimous respect.
Jake Bogoch, editor of SKIING magazine, “CR Johnson was one of the most innovative skiers I’d ever seen. To go through what he went through, sustaining a bad head injury, then making a major comeback, speaks volumes about CR’s character.

Amanda Knox convicted for the murder of her Roommate Meredith Kercher

US latest local breaking news reports that the murder of Meredith Kercher caught the attention of the whole world. Perhaps it was the fact that this was a pretty young exchange student in a strange city. Perhaps it was because of the odd stories of orgies and devil worship that seemed to float around the story. Maybe it was because an attractive American girl murdered another in a faraway country. For whatever reason Kercher’s was murdered, her now convicted killers Amanda Knox and her boyfriend stole headlines for months.
When the smoke had cleared, Italy claimed it had its culprits when they convicted Raffaele Sollecito, Rudy Hermann Guede, and Amanda Knox. Almost from the beginning, Italian prosecutors came under fire for the way they handled the investigation. Knox and Sollecito were interviewed by police without an attorney present. Other accusations said that the prosecutors clearly wanted to convict Knox because she was an American at first and then because the trial had drawn so much press coverage. The Italian prosecutors could hardly have egg on their face by failing to get a conviction when the rest of the world was watching.
In an unrelated case that still might speak volumes about his conduct chief prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, was convicted of abuse of office. The charges and conviction in that case stem from Mignini intimidating witnesses and even going so far as to bug the phones of certain journalists. From the very beginning, the Knox family has stood behind Amanda and continued to claim her innocence. Whether it is because they have launched a successful media campaign touting Amanda’s lack of guilt, or because of the recent developments involving the prosecutor, the Knox family has being gaining sympathy.
It was recently announced that the Knox family appeared on Oprah’s television show. Whether this tactic will have any effect on Amanda’s 26-year prison sentence has yet to be seen. Edda Mellas says the family will fight to get its daughter out of prison. For Knox’s father, Curt Knox, the memory of his daughter’s despair was so painful that he walked away from Oprah Winfrey’s cameras because his own emotions overwhelmed him. “There are days where the visits are really, really nice, and then there are days when it’s extremely tough, and you do the best you can,” an emotional Curt Knox told Winfrey.
“She asks, ‘Why is this happening to me? I haven’t done anything, I’ve told the truth.’ How do you explain that to her?� said Mellas. “How do you explain that mistakes happen and she’s in the middle of a massive mistake?” The University of Washington, where Knox was a language student before her arrest, has developed an independent study program for her and corresponds with her through the mail, grading her papers and allowing her to work toward graduation.
Amanda Knox was spending a semester in Perugia in November 2007 when her roommate was murdered. Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted in December of sexual assault and murder in Kercher’s death. Knox was sentenced to 26 years and Sollecito was given 25 years. The five year mark for the Holloway tragedy is only a few months away and although police has investigated and made arrests, the disappearance remains unsolved by authorities.
Police believes that much of the evidence points to Joran van der Sloot, the person last seen with Holloway. Though he has been arrested many times, Aruban courts found insufficient evidence to charge Joran van der Sloot in Natalee Holloway’s disappearance or murder, and he remains free to this day.
However, the new confession has left prosecutors unimpressed. According to a report Van der Sloot’s recent statement provides details similar to his 2007 “admission” which came during an undercover operation by a Dutch crime reporter.

News in the US: Senate takes up jobs bill

News in the US reports that on Monday the Senate voted to push forward a $15 billion jobs creation bill which would provide businesses a tax break for hiring the unemployed.
Five Republicans including Sen. Scott Brown who is newly elected, R-Mass reached across the aisle to endorse the formal procedure, which passed by a 62-30 vote. One Democrat did not support it.
The 4-prong bill would:
*Exempt employers from Social Security payroll taxes on new hires who were unemployed;
*Fund highway and transit programs through 2010;
*Extend a tax break for business that spend money on capital investments like equipment purchases;
*Expand the use of the Build America Bonds program, which helps states and municipalities fund capital construction projects.
