The Sweetest Day: Quotes, Poems, Ideas, History All at a Single Place

October 12, 2011

News Worldwide – The Sweetest Day is mostly observed by Midwestern United States on third Saturday of October each year. The day is said to have an importance from social perspective. On a sweetest day people tend to honor their wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, family and colleagues by offering to them bouquets, gifts, greeting cards, baked products, and by other gestures of warmth.

A lot of people are ignorant of many holidays in the calendar. If someone would come to know of this day he would ask “Where did this day come from? Or when is the sweetest day celebrated? Or what day is the sweetest day in October this year? And whole bunch of stuff like that. So I am going to answer most of such questions briefly.

When and What Day is the Sweetest Day this Year?

It would be Saturday, October 15th, 2011. Don’t forget to buy some sweets, flowers and candies for your loved one no matter how busy you are.

Where did this Day come from?

Tradition of celebrating this day came from the efforts of 12 confectioners to express their love towards residents of Cleveland hit by hard times such as orphans and financially poor old folks. The first sweetest day was introduced in Cleveland Plain Dealer’s edition of October 8, 1921. With the help of some of the biggest movie stars of that time such as Theda Bara and Ann Pennington, the confectioners distributed around 20,000 boxes of sweets and candies to the intended audience. The confectioners throughout United States declared a National Candy Day on October 8, 1922. Attempts were made to associate the sweetest day with other favorite holidays such as Mothers Day, Fathers Day, and Valentine’s Day. A lot of children and local charity institutions had been given over 15,000 boxes of sweets and candies by October 17, 1940.

So what do I do on the Sweetest Day?

Well there are many sweetest day ideas you can benefit from. Typical activities would be to take your love for a ride, or if he or she would like you can give them a box of sweets, candies or my favorite “a pack of the finest Swiss chocolate” or dinner at her or his favorite café perhaps.

Are there any Sweetest Day Quotes to help me out?

Believe me that by whispering your heart out into her ear while you cuddling in the kitchen, lounge, or in privacy would do wonders. But if you aren’t very good at expressing yourself you can always use a few of my favorite sweetest day quotes listed right here:

We really have to understand the person we want to love. If our love is only a will to possess, it is not love. If we only think of ourselves, if we know only our own needs and ignore the needs of the other person, we cannot love. Thich Nhat Hanh (1926-, Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher)

Love is the true means by which the world is enjoyed: our love to others and others love to us. Thomas Traherne (1636-1674, British clergyman, poet, mystic)

Love talked about is easily turned aside, but love demonstrated is irresistible. Stan Mooneyham

Kindness is tenderness. Kindness is love, but perhaps greater than love. Kindness is good will. Kindness says, I want you to be happy. Randolph Ray

Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965, German born medical missionary, theologian, musician, and philosopher)

Women still remember the first kiss after men have forgotten the last. Remy De Gourmont (1858-1915, French novelist, philosopher, poet, playwright)

What if I want to sing a poem to my husband?

There are many sweetest day poems out there you can sing to your loved ones. I read this poem once somewhere on this internet and I sang it to my girlfriend:
Sometimes in this lifetime,
we meet a special soul,
who fills our very essence,
to almost overflow,
we drink the cup of friendship,
it tastes like ruby wine,
and you know within your heart,
this meeting was Divine.
This soul that lives within your heart,
no distance can prevail,
an inner spark, within the heart,
becomes a Holy Grail,
the starting of a journey,
in which you both shall be,
a reflection of each other,
for all eternity.Copyright © 2011

October 11, 2011

News Worldwide – You would have heard it time and again that internet world is what controls the world today and I want to add more to this that if you are not internet savvy you are nothing. Therefore, before indulging yourself into the complexities of internet world, here is a short and quick review of the top 5 internet people that are famous and most talked about internet personalities for their significant positions and controversies.

1. Mark Zuckerberg:

The CEO of Facebook need no introduction but as we know there are yet many who do not know much about internet, this is for them. He was born in 1984, which makes him 27 years old this year and this 27 years old guy own $17.5 billion in the same year. Quite a rich dude at 27. Anyway, there are loads of controversies associated with Mark Zuckerberg too and one of them is that he is not the real man behind the idea of Facebook. He is a Jew and the movie “the social network” was inspired by his project facebook. The guy is known more for his position than facebook controversy.

2. Julian Assange:

The term hackers comes into the minds of all those who hear the name of Julian Assange. He is the owner of most controversial website “Wiki leaks” which seems to have frightened not just individuals but even entire states of the world. Assange was born in 1971 and is Australian national. Though, he is not just a hacker but his expertise’s have been enormous in the mentioned category. This guy is known for the controversy of wiki leaks more than his position.

3. Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin:

These guys are the Chief executives at Google. They are certainly known for the position they hold which is today controlling the world. Google is the most trafficked search engine in the world with most number of pages indexed and crawled every minute. Despite, it is said that there is no internet monopoly but trust me they have it and it is because of the attraction, user friendly theme and other Google products.

4. Steve Jobs: The guy died a few days back but still is on number 4 on our list. He was the CEO of Apple. He was famous for his position and brain. His quotations are referred most of the time on internet when it is about something brain and technology.

5. Jimmy Wales:
This guy is the founder of world renowned website “Wikipedia”. One place where you can have all the info needed. Personally, I have found many people browsing it while it comes about basic or initial information about anything. It is a branded website I should say. So Jimmy Wales is recognized for his position at Wikipedia. Copyright © 2011

National Boss Day

October 11, 2011

News worldwide – A National Boss Day! Was my first reaction in utter surprise when I heard of it for the first time on a peaceful morning of October 16th 2001. I didn’t know of it till a few years back, seriously I didn’t till I met a person who happened to me my first boss. Then came October 16 when my colleague john told me it’s a National Boss Day today and I was like what? A National Boss Day! Bosses aren’t cool john why would anyone give a whole day away to honor them? John smiled and went to his desk. I searched the internet for information about the day and found it to be around since 1958, the day had been around for 43 years and I didn’t know it existed. I’ve worked with four had 4 bosses in past 7 years and I never met one to even think about honoring him. Until I met my fifth boss a couple of years ago.

Tradition has it that Bosses Day also known as National Boss Day was registered with US Chamber of Commerce in 1958 by Patricia Bays Haroski who happened to be working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois. Her intention was to honor her boss who happened to be her father. Four years later Governor of Illinois Otto Kerner officially proclaimed October 16 as “National Boss Day”.

Since then employees in the US and Canada honor their bosses and express their gratitude towards their boss for treating them with kindness and respect. Believe me there are bosses who do so. So we get to have a day off thanks to National Boss’s Day which is often made fun of by the term “Hallmark Holiday”. In recent years more and more countries seem to be interested in adding another day to their “Holiday Calendar” so now Australian, Indians, Irish, British and South Africans too get to have a day off in the name of Boss Appreciation Day.

National Boss Day is a very good opportunity to let your bosses know officially that you care about them. Ms. Patricia’s motive was not only to honor her father but also to improve relations between employer and their employees. She believed that by sparing a day for your boss, like we do for our mothers, fathers, religious events and festivals, saints, institution’s, famous personalities and other national days, we could acknowledge our support and express our appreciation for their kindness and care as a team leader which in turn would make your boss feel special.

Why not? Bosses also desire to be loved and respected by their team members and employees. That was for great bosses and for those not-so-great bosses we can try managing our manager; somehow bring about a change in them. Best way to do that is by telling them the truth about how you honestly feel about him/her in a selfless manner. If you feel it isn’t working then try something else because you know your boss better than me. Or you can always head back home and have a nice day with your family. Copyright © 2011

Demerits of Jagjit Singh Singing Are Still a Living Fact

October 10, 2011

News Worldwide Jagjit Singh was known as the King of Gazals in India. He died this morning at 8 am at the age of 70. Despite his fans following and his popular songs and Gazals, one cannot diminish the fact, his singing was orchestra based as against the traditional style of ghazal singing which required only a harmonium and tabbla beat.

Now those, who are masters of classical singing or even merely identify singing realize the sheer fact I just mentioned. Though, this does not dilute or diminish the fact that he was a good singer and had one of the biggest fan following all around the world. Moreover, he was one of those who are suing the latest instrumental music. Now this is where the demerits and merits go together in case of Jagjit Singh’s singing.

For merits, his compositions and instrumental background was one of the finest of recent times. It created an effect which involved the listeners deeper than even anticipated. While on the demerits side, the same orchestra was what made him stand not even in the top 20 of ghazal singers. His vocals were not as strong as of a proper ghazal or classical singer. His pace of singing lacked variations. If we hear closer one can easily identify how limited form of beat and mid octave. In Hindi classical, he could sing in mender and maad octaves only. In other word, he was not able to sing high
notes.

On the other hand, if we take a glance at Pakistani classical and ghazal singers, the country has more than tens of names that have enormous hold and command on the classical and ghazal singing. Such as: Noor Jahan, Mehdi Hassan, Hamid Ali, Ammanat Ali, Roshan Arra begam, Nayyara Noor, Ghulam Ali, Nusrat Fateh Ali, Rahet Fateh Ali, Iqbal Bano, Gul Bahar Bano and many more. All these singers are capable to freely sing in three octaves and had/have classical experts.

Here, I want to add that this comparison is not made to hurt the sentiments of any one but only. It is a centuries old fact that Music is born in India but matures in Pakistan. Which means the raags are from India but people who master them are from Pakistan.

On the death of Jagjit Singh, certainly his contributions to Indian Ghazal cannot be underestimated as he was an icon. Copyright © 2011

Mother-in-Law Day

October 9, 2011

News Worldwide – The tradition of celebrating Mother in Law Day started on January 23rd, 2002. It is celebrated on 4th Sunday of October each year ever since. This does not mean that before 2002 mother in laws were not given respect and honor for raising and bringing up your spouse or husband. In many cultures observed by their respective countries Mothers and Mother in Law have been treated with love, honor, and dignity while in same cultures there have been a profound increase in “problems with in-laws”.

A lot of articles have been written on “how to celebrate mother in law day with your mother in law”. You can take your mother in law to her favorite restaurant to enjoy a happy meal, take her to a temple, church, or religious place to pray for blessing, you can send her special gifts, bake her cake, write a poem for her, or pay her a surprise visit and take her on a drive. Ways to celebrate mother’s day with your mother in law are limitless. Yet there are couples who find it hard to get along with their in-laws. Many articles address the issue and find solutions to common causes of a hitch with in-laws. Many divorced couples blame their in-laws for the failure of their relationship. A long-term success of marriage is said to be crucially associated with relations between women and their mother in laws. There’s always a ways to get rid of your “mother in law problem” if it becomes impossible for you to tolerate her.

Once upon a time in China there was a girl called Li-Li. She happened to get married to charming gentleman. In early days of her marriage she was pampered by her mother in law but the joy of her married life was short lived as her relationship with her mother in law went from bad to worse in matter of days. Both were very unlike each other in terms of habits, perception and lifestyle. According to Chinese traditions she had to unquestionably obey her mother in law which made matters even worse. Their incompatibility had damaged their relationship with each other. Their never ending arguing and fighting had made the husband miserable.

Soon Li-Li felt that tolerance on both sides had run thin. The never ending disparages and no way of reconciliation forced Li-Li to conclude her relationship with her mother in law and poison her.

Li-Li sought help of Mr. Huang, her father’s old friend who sold herbs. She told him about her miserable life and asked him if he could help poison her mother-in-law. After a long contemplation into the matter Mr. Huang said “Li-Li I’ll help you with your problem but you need to do exactly as I say” to which Li-Li replied, “Yes uncle, I’ll obey to whatever you say”. He went into the backroom of his shop and returned with a pack of herbs. He told her “you cannot use a quick poison to kill your mother in law because that will cause suspicion of murder”. Handing the herbs over to her he continued, “These herbs will slowly develop poison in her body. Mix a little of these herbs into her meal every other day. To avoid suspicion when she dies you must act friendly towards her at all costs. Do not argue with her, obey her commands and treat her like a queen.”

Li-Li was in high spirits as she thanked Mr. Huang for his help and stormed back home to start acting on the plan right away. The herb treated meal was served to her mother in law almost every day. Li-Li stopped arguing and fighting with her. She managed to hold her temper on almost all occasions. All of a sudden her mother in law seemed to be a loving and caring woman to her. Getting along her got so easy she almost forgot that she ever had a dispute with her. They hadn’t had an argument in over six months. The atmosphere of the house had changed. Her mother in laws attitude had changed so much that she started loving her like her own daughter. She wouldn’t get tired of admiring Li-Li in front of her relatives and friends. In the last six months she had built her temperament and tolerance to the level that she never felt like getting upset with her mother in law let alone arguing or going nuts at her. A doomed relationship had turned in to a most blossoming one. Li-Li had come to love her mother in law as her own.

Li-Li went to her uncle’s place one day and asked him to provide her with herbs that would keep the poison from killing her mother in law. “She has changed so much. She loves me as her own daughter and I don’t want her to die. Please help me save her”. Mr. Huang smile and said. “Do not worry child, the herbs I gave you were meant to perk up her health instead of killing her. The whole plan was meant to cleanse your mind off your attitude which was poisoning your relationship with her. The plan seems to have worked perfectly as the poison has been replaced with your love for her”

Our in-laws are as human as we are. They need a sense of being loved by their children, cared by them when they are weak, attended to by them when they are sick, pampered by their children when they are miserable, and presence of their children when they die. No woman can replace our mothers and our mother-in-laws are mothers too. Give her the respect, love and affection she deserves.Copyright © 2011

Emma Watson Haircut, a makeover or rebellious move

October 8, 2011

News Worldwide Emma Watson haircut was not a Britney Spears moment, she says in an interview. But her second statement makes it appear like an act of rebellion for sure despite she says it was not something rebellious.

According to news report, Emma Watson said, she was never allowed to cut her hair and as soon as she got the opportunity she availed it and gave her the look, which she says is not like Britney Spears moment. It appears that at one point she is contradicting two things. First, she wants to confirm that it was not rebellion but she was not allowed to cut her hair before and then she says, it was not Britney Spears moment. Moreover, I also want to add here that glancing at Emma Watson photos, a general reaction to them is that it gives her a boyish look and not a bold one.

Emma Watson might be enjoying her moments of independence for now. But it certainly shows mindset of a society as a whole. We may stop our kids for things we think are bad for them but as soon as they get the opportunity they will do it again.

So it leads me to say that we are not actually inspiring our kids for not doing the wrong but our gestures and moves appear “ something they want to do and we don’t let them do” to them. This means the message is not clear or most probably we are not using the proper method to inspire our kids. May be we do not stand as role models.

Here I do not want to target or talk precisely about Emma Watson haircut but I felt I can use this opportunity to send a message to all those parents who think their kids do not listen. There are certainly reasons for everything and one big reason that I see is that we do not stand as role models. SO before we stop our kids from doing anything, we should rather have proved ourselves to be good and inspirational enough. Copyright © 2011

Boondock Saints and All Saints’ Day

October 8, 2011

News WorldwideAll Saints Day is more of a religious custom than just a national day. All Catholic and Orthodox Catholics believe that saints of God are as alive as we are and that they are mediating on our behalf constantly. There were saints whom we knew and there were many more of them we didn’t get to know of. All Saints Day instituted by Church is solemnity celebrated on November 1st to commemorate all saints, known and unknown. According to Pope Urban IV it is to make sure that all deficiencies are supplied with in a celebration of the saint’s feast during each year by those who have been initiated in Catholic Christian rites, the faithful. The eve of All Saints Day, October 31st, is popularly known as All Hallows Eve.

Where did the Concept of All Saints Day come from?

The concept of All Saints Day comes from a Catholic belief conceptualized in what is known as “Communion of Saints”. The Catholic belief is that all of God’s people whether in heaven, earth, or in a purgatory (as known in the west) are implicated in a communion which simply means that they are alive. St. Cyril of Jerusalem (350 AD) testifies that our common communion with Jesus Christ joins us with the heavenly community of saints in our prayers.
I think I’ve heard of a movie with that name!

The entertainment business has also seemed to take the religious event into consideration. A movie with the name of The Boondock Saints came in 1999 written and directed by Troy Duffy (under genre of Action-Crime-Drama-Thriller). The cast includes Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman, Willem Dafoe, David Della Rocco, Billy Connolly, Bob Marley, David Ferry, Brian Mahoney, Carlo Rota, Ron Jeremy, and Gerard Parkes.

The plot: It so happens that two Irish brothers, after attending a mass in a church, somehow manage to have a brawl with some mafia thugs in a bar and kill them accidently in self-defense. To clear their name they then turn themselves over to the police and get released as heroes. After the incident they see it as a calling by God and start wiping mafia gang members off one by one. They get full public support for their deeds. But law enforcement agencies wouldn’t let such thing to continue. So an FBI Agent is assigned the duty of investigating the ongoing slaughter. The findings in the agent’s investigation force him to think to whether to arrest the brothers or join them to rid Boston of evil. Watch the movie to find the rest of the story.

An unrated version of the movie was released in May 22, 2006. In 2003 documentary film followed the story of Troy Duffy in “Overnight”. In May 2010 a comic book story was released which was written by Troy Duffy, produced by Innfusion Inc. and released through 12 Gauge Comics.

An Objection to the celebration of all Saints Day!

Many non-Catholics say that commemoration of saints at such a wider scale tends to give an impression that All Saints Day is an Idolatry event. According to Catholics worship is only for God and veneration is for his holy men and women who spent their entire life following teachings of Jesus Christ and died in grace. They believe that the highest form of veneration is due to blessings of Virgin Mary. Copyright © 2011

United Nations Day

October 8, 2011

News worldwide – The general Assembly by resolution 168 (II) on 31st October 1947, declared that October 24, the anniversary of Charter of the United Nations shall officially be called United Nations Day which was aimed at gaining support from nations of the world for its work that was devoted to bring to the world’s knowledge of its purpose and achievements.

Then in December 6, 1971 the General Assembly, with purpose of enhancing the principles of the charter, passed another resolution 2782 (XXVI) declaring that the anniversary of the United Nations shall be an international holiday to be observed by all member states in order to reaffirm their faith in the charter. United Nations became a part of united Nations week later on which is observed from 20th to 26th of October.

The predecessor “League of Nations”

After the devastating First World War most countries including France, South Africa, US and UK came to believe that there should be an organization of nations where all member countries can sit down and talk and resolve their issues in order to avoid repetition of the war gone by. By that time communications were getting better and international organizations had enough experience to work with each other in harmony and share information and mutual interests which made the idea of League of Nations practically possible. Thus, with an aim to preserve peace through treaties, reconciliation and arbitration, and to promote sharing of trade and other social affairs among member nations, League of Nations was established in January 1918. With 42 constituent European and non-European countries League of Nations held its first council meeting in Paris on January 20, 1918. Member Governments grew to as large as 57 in number later on.

League of Nations was dependant on its members and had no military power to enforce its resolutions. With insufficient moral and military authority the league failed to avert a Second World War. Failure in preserving peace made most member governments to withdraw from the League one by one such as Japan, US and USSR weakening the purpose of continuing the league. As France and Britain didn’t take its charter seriously, inevitably the League of Nations ceased to exist on April 19, 1946.

Birth of United Nations.

With League of Nations gone the idea of international co-operation at a global level didn’t fade away. Before the dissolution of League of Nations a charter for a more strong and agreed upon union of nations had been drafted in 1945. By October 24, 1945 governments of Republic of China, USSR, United States, United Kingdom, and France had sanctioned the charter among other 46 signatories. With an aim to promote peace and sharing of economic resources among the member states founded on code of justice and security of member and non-member nations, “United Nations” succeeded its predecessor and officially came into being on October 24, 1945.

The birthday of United Nations is celebrated around the globe every year as United Nations Day.

United Nations Today.

The world has been watching as a lot has been happening since a couple of decades. The Russian War in Afghanistan, Iraq’s invasion in Kuwait, the war on terror, US’s invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq and balkanization of Arab countries to the preparations of a “New World Order” almost finalized, like its predecessor “The League of Nations” the authority, dignity and existence of United Nations has become questionable. Remembering Steve Jobs from a Historical Perspective

October 7, 2011

News WorldwideSteve Jobs, a visionary, tremendously talented and one of the most celebrated greatest American CEO of his time, Co-founder and former CEO of the world’s most renowned technological giant Apple Inc. died “peacefully” surrounded by his family at his home at the age of 56 on Wednesday October 5, 2011. Steve Jobs Death has triggered online pouring of tributes and condolences.

History of Jobs

Steve Jobs was born in 1955 to Abdulfattah John Jandali and Joanne Schieble (Job’s biological parents) in San Francisco. His parents gave him up for adoption when he was born. Paul and Clara a couple from Mountain View California adopted him shortly in February 1955. The couple moved to Palo Alto California due to Job’s dislikes of his school. In Palo Alto he attended Cupertino Junior High and Homestead High School. After graduation in 1972 Jobs joined Reed College in Portland, Oregon where he spent only one semester and dropped out. In 1974 Jobs was hired by Atari, a manufacturer of video games.

Steve Jobs along with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne founded Apple in 1976. The first CEO of Apple was Mike Scott recruited by Steve in 1978. Steve recruited John Sculley to become the second CEO of Apple just a year before Steve introduced “Macintosh”, on January 24, 1984 in Apple’s annual meeting of shareholders. Macintosh became a commercially successful computer that introduced a graphic user interface for the first time which was replicated by other companies later on. Due to some working relationship problems with Sculley Steve was relieved of his job in May 1985.

After being hired by NEXT in 1985 and staying there till 1996, Steve made it back to Apple when NEXT was acquired by Apple in 1997 for $429 million. Steve became a formal interim CEO in September 1997 after Gil Amelio’s drive out in July. Steve became a permanent CEO of Apple in 2000. As Steve’s health began deteriorating rapidly throughout the decade he resigned as a CEO in august 2011 but stayed as Chairman of the board.

Health Issues and Death.

Steve was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumor in his pancreas in mid 2004. After undergoing a pancreaticoduodenectomy in July 2004 the tumor seemed to have been removed. His resistances against his doctor’s recommendations made his health deteriorate at a rapid pace. Rumors about his health would come alive each time he would make an appearance at an expo appearing to be weak and thin or assigning someone else for briefing on a product instead of him. As the speculations became tougher to thwart, Steve made a statement on January 5, 2009 on Apple.com in which he said that he had been suffering from some sort of hormonal imbalance for a long time. On January 14th 2009 he said that “Complexity of my health issues have exceeded my expectations” and took a six month leave. Tim Cook took his place as CEO of Apple until Steve recovered completely. Fate kept playing with Steve when his prognosis was stated as ‘excellent” after he had a liver transplant in April 2009 at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tennessee.

Steve returned to Apple after the transplant on January 17th 2011 and made appearances at iPad 2 and iCloud launch event and other similar events until he couldn’t carry on and resigned from his role as CEO on August 24th 2011. Steve’s family made a statement on October 5, 2011 that Steve Jobs “died peacefully today”. Copyright © 2011
