National Boss Day
October 11, 2011
News worldwide – A National Boss Day! Was my first reaction in utter surprise when I heard of it for the first time on a peaceful morning of October 16th 2001. I didn’t know of it till a few years back, seriously I didn’t till I met a person who happened to me my first boss. Then came October 16 when my colleague john told me it’s a National Boss Day today and I was like what? A National Boss Day! Bosses aren’t cool john why would anyone give a whole day away to honor them? John smiled and went to his desk. I searched the internet for information about the day and found it to be around since 1958, the day had been around for 43 years and I didn’t know it existed. I’ve worked with four had 4 bosses in past 7 years and I never met one to even think about honoring him. Until I met my fifth boss a couple of years ago.
Tradition has it that Bosses Day also known as National Boss Day was registered with US Chamber of Commerce in 1958 by Patricia Bays Haroski who happened to be working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois. Her intention was to honor her boss who happened to be her father. Four years later Governor of Illinois Otto Kerner officially proclaimed October 16 as “National Boss Day”.
Since then employees in the US and Canada honor their bosses and express their gratitude towards their boss for treating them with kindness and respect. Believe me there are bosses who do so. So we get to have a day off thanks to National Boss’s Day which is often made fun of by the term “Hallmark Holiday”. In recent years more and more countries seem to be interested in adding another day to their “Holiday Calendar” so now Australian, Indians, Irish, British and South Africans too get to have a day off in the name of Boss Appreciation Day.
National Boss Day is a very good opportunity to let your bosses know officially that you care about them. Ms. Patricia’s motive was not only to honor her father but also to improve relations between employer and their employees. She believed that by sparing a day for your boss, like we do for our mothers, fathers, religious events and festivals, saints, institution’s, famous personalities and other national days, we could acknowledge our support and express our appreciation for their kindness and care as a team leader which in turn would make your boss feel special.
Why not? Bosses also desire to be loved and respected by their team members and employees. That was for great bosses and for those not-so-great bosses we can try managing our manager; somehow bring about a change in them. Best way to do that is by telling them the truth about how you honestly feel about him/her in a selfless manner. If you feel it isn’t working then try something else because you know your boss better than me. Or you can always head back home and have a nice day with your family. Copyright © 2011

National Children’s day — A Different Perspective
October 4, 2011
News Worldwide – National Children’s day is conducted on second Sunday of June each year. It was observed on June 12th this year and next National Children’s day is scheduled to be observed on June 10th 2012. It is observed as an event in various countries of the world, to honor children in particular. We take vows that we shall protect our children from violence, extortion, abuse and so on and various activities are organized to be conducted at schools and at home. It was by resolution 836(IX) of 14th December 1954; the General Assembly recommended that every country enrolled in UN at least shall conduct a Universal Children’s day. Around 70 countries in our world observe a National Children’s Day with an aim to honor children and their rights.
Why a National Day?
Mainly due to the fact that children around the world are subjected to all sorts of brutality imaginable such as child Labor, sexual abuse, violence, medical experimentation, burial of infant girls (in old times as well as in some parts of the world today),etc. A National Children’s Day is observed to remind us of their welfare and rights.
Children in Ancient Times
A quick look at history tells us that in the era of tribes children were the center of attention and were considered to be an integral part of their community. Children were seen as a sign of blessing especially if they were sons. Childless couples were thought to have been punished by God. The tribal community depended heavily on children for their social and future security of the clan. Family values were of great significance as each family was supposed to follow their respective tribal customs. Mother was supposed to administer affairs of domestic nature and father had the responsibility to train his sons to hunt and equip him with arts of warfare. He had to teach them their religious concepts that formed the basis from which the tribe derived its existence and strength.
Today’s Child.
Today, family values that once were the foundations of our tribes have been crucified by our modern life styles. Traditions of the ancient times that enabled parents to make decisions for welfare of their children have gone forever. Children today breathe in an entirely different atmosphere. Source of information (both religious and otherwise) and training that once came from an experience of a life time of parents has now been replaced with computers and television sets as in most cases parents have to stay away from home for long hours to make a living. Parents as well as individuals seem to be more committed to the interests and welfare of a wealthy few who steer the norms and values in today’s western society. This loss of religious beliefs, social norms and family traditions which once formed the basis of western society has caused the loss of a child’s significance.
There are a number of countries today particularly in the middle-east and south-east region where authority of children doesn’t override that of their parents, where parents have authority over the welfare of their children, where children are taught the ways of their family traditions, social norms, morality, respect, and religious concepts, which ensures their obedience towards the teachings of their Lord, parents and teachers forming and sustaining the basis of a healthy and prosperous society. The convention on the rights of a child by UN sees to it that those days do not return especially in the western society. Copyright © 2011

Troy Davis executed – Justice serving injustice time and again
September 22, 2011
News World wide – In Jackson supporter gathered on Wednesday after the execution of Troy Davis. The day marked distress in Georgia and abstraction rose from Troy Davis family. Troy Davis was a policeman and was convicted on charges of killing.
After the news was on aired that the US Supreme Court has rejected the last minute stay order for the execution of Troy Davis, people went quiet and rallied for a day.
Huge level of stress signs came out from the family as the bunched together and wept.
A big number of anti-death penalty organizations and crowd stood in rage and chanting. Many stood for miracle to happen as the execution time of Troy Davis came near. The execution time of Troy Davis was 19:00 (23:00 GMT).
A candle was lit temporarily as the US Supreme Court was asked to take a stay on the order of punishment in Washington. But soon the 9 justices’ rejection order came at 22:30 (02:30 GMT).
Many called it a moment of Justice serving injustice. It was not a small decision. It was about a life. It was about Troy Davis execution. The US supreme Court was supposed to hold orders many said.
On the other hand, some analysts state that if US Supreme Cour would have taken a stay o the order, the case would turn controversial and somewhat political.
One could see the anti-death penalty groups there and if the stay would have been taken, I would have created more pressure on US Supreme court not for handling this case only but because this case would have turned a reference case for future judgments. And after all Troy Davis was proved guilty.
Some also said that the court has been taking a number of unpopular decisions since sometime. Some recalled Casey Anthony case where many believed that she was guilty and yet the court did not make a penalty charge against him and now this case where the US court was asked to grant a stay order but it went straight for execution.
Police had previously derived close to the groups’ warnings deafening, in an obvious show of force, jammed in the groups as police helicopters encircled overhead, while the Troy Davis family pleaded throughout his final moments.
“Killing a man under this enormous cloud of doubt is horrific, and amounts to a catastrophic failure of the justice system,” one stated.
Davis’s mother Anneliese MacPhail said she was “absolutely devastated” by the delay, stating his fault was evident from the evidence she had seen and experience in all court attendances she has attended over the two decades.
Martina Correria, Davis’s wheelchair-bound sister, made a symbolic statement in the build-up to the execution, telling reporters “I’m here to tell you that I’m going to stand here for my brother today,” as she rose up from her chair.
“This is an outrage. No one can execute a man with no physical evidence… only on eye(witness) testimony,” said Al Sharpton, a veteran civil rights campaigner.
