USA Faces Record Measles Cases In 15 Years

Just in initial 4 months of year 2011, US has seen 118 reported cases of measles. The statistics of these cases have been selected from 23 states. This is the highest number of measles cases after 1996. Since 1990 an endemic or sustained measles transmission has not taken place in US.

From year 2001 to 2008 56 measles cases were reported while 118 just the initial 19 weeks of 2011 is a large increase.
According to the reports and statistics 89% of the cases are having a history link of importation from abroad. 34 of them were American’s that came back home while 12 were foreign visitors.
It is urged by CDC that people should get vaccinated against measles. The main reason to get these vaccines is the increased number of measles patients.
Here is an analysis of reported measles cases according to age:
• 15% (18) – less than twelve months
• 20% (24) – 1 to 4 years
• 19% (23) – 5 to 19 years
• 45% (53) – at least twenty years

• Dominican Republic – 1 Patient probably caught it from French tourist
• India – 14
• Indonesia – 1
• Philippines – 4
• Philippines/Vietnam/Singapore/Malaysia* – 1
• China – 1
