News in the US: The Vermont Brownie Company was featured in Tuesday night’s episode of Throwdown with Bobby Flay on the Food Network. Vermont Brownie Company co-owners Shawna Lidsky and Katherine Hayward gathered their close friends and family around several TVs to watch the episode premiere. For them it was a fantastic experience.

Former Channel 3 Sports Anchor Shawna Lidsky started the Vermont Brownie Company a little over a year ago and was recently challenged by Food Network star Chef Bobby Flay to a culinary Throwdown.

It started in August when Lidsky took a call from a Food Network producer informing them the network was interested in the company. “We’re actually not sure how they found us,” says Hayward. Lidsky and Hayward had to send a demo-tape to the network. They included video of the kitchen where they bake the brownies, video from a local farm, and a few shots of Hayward’s newborn baby because they thought the cuteness might help. Apparently it worked because the network called back and set up a time to do a video shoot with the women.

Vermont Brownie Company is relatively new, hitting the market in September of 2008. Some brownies are sold in local stores but the majority of their orders come in over the internet.

The women work out a bagel shop called Wally’s Place, in South Hero. When the bagel shop closes the women move in with their brownie ingredients. It started off with just the two of them and a few volunteers. In the past few weeks the company has hired about 20 part time employees.
